Why January is not the month for change, and why balance is more important
Advice on why balance in your life is so important, by Marie Farmer, Founder of Mini Mealtimes…
”The new year is a time of resolutions;
- lose weight, quit your job
- learn to cook
- start running
- get another job to replace the one you just quit
The list is endless. I was never one to pick January as the month for change, it feels like a way of putting pressure on yourself at a time when you feel most vulnerable.
Then the adverts happened. Bombarded with images and promises of a fit body and healthy lifestyle, my resistance was futile – marketing works folks.
I started tracking my meals again and working out at home like I used to. It wasn’t easy – my husband always forgets to keep the packets so I can scan the barcode, and my son insists on climbing on me when I do my squats in the living room (I’m grateful it’s not the other way round at least).
Within a week I was taking it too far, getting annoyed at every meal untracked and exercise schedule not adhered to. It seems I’m a woman of extremes!
So the realisation I want to share is of the importance of balance – by all means strive for improvement – just don’t admonish yourself for perceived imperfections and tiny mistakes.
Give yourself a break (in all senses of the phrase) and treat yourself as you would want others to treat you.
Taking care of yourself is the most important thing you will ever do in your life.
If you aren’t a functioning happy person (most of the time), it will only have a negative effect on yourself and the people around you.
With a bit of balance, I wake up feeling more rested, my outlook on the future is more positive and I have more energy overall. Take self-care everyone!”
