What’s an internship?

Dictionary definition: Any official or formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession

  • An internship is an opportunity that employers offer to students interested in gaining work experience in particular industries
  • An internship can be part-time or full-time, paid or un-paid
  • Typically internships last 3-6 months
  • They are a good way to ‘try out’ a certain career
  • They are a good way to learn how the real world operates
  • They are a good way to make you ‘stand out’ to an employer looking at your CV
  • Some companies offer full-time jobs at the end of internships, though this is not guaranteed, and is the exception rather than the norm
