Council tax

What is council tax?

Council tax is a tax on domestic property that is collected by local authorities. The amount is worked out on the value of the property which then falls under a ‘valuation band’ and that band determines how much you pay monthly.

Typically one person is liable to pay the council tax, this person must be over the age of 18 and it will be their name on the bill.

Each year, every local authorities will set the valuation band rates.

Some properties are exempt from council tax, to find a list head to the Citizens Advice Bureau website
