Blue EU card

A blue European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is free of charge.

The health card allows you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in another European Economic Area (EEA) country (or Switzerland). The treatment will either be at a reduced cost or, more often, for free.

Carrying the card with you whilst travelling helps locals, should you need medical assistance, to take your details for insurance purposes. Please note it’s not valid on cruises. To find out more about travel insurance click here.

Please note the EHIC card is not an alternative to travel insurance. Some insurers insist you hold an EHIC, and many will wave the access if you have one.

You can apply for an EHIC on their website
